The Heart of the School - K-12 School franchise

When a school aspires actively to facilitate that each of the students entrusted to its care grows up – through the meticulously envisioned systemic process of the institution’s unique program of education – to be a creative, competent, caring, credible and committed individual who is empowered personally to lead a life of spiritual, intellectual, emotional, aesthetic, cultural, social, physical and professional fullness and integrity and, at the collective level, to coalesce well enough to contribute meaningfully towards constituting an outstanding, responsible, resourceful, compassionate and disciplined citizenry committed to change and progress vis-à-vis life in India in particular and the world in general and achieves such a goal consistently, it transforms itself into a center of educational excellence. ‘It’s relatively easier to arrive at such an academically loaded- and perhaps even bombastic- definition of what a so called center of educational excellence should be than to come up with a lucid practical understanding of what is needed as well as the pertinent road map to take an institution in the right direction.

However difficult the task may appear, it is obviously not impossible though it would surely involve herculean efforts in all areas of activity undertaken at the school level. Broadly, the first step for bridging the multiple gaps between and within the ‘academic’ the ‘practical’ with regard to establishing a center of educational excellence would be to design and execute an exceptional and progressive program of education personalities

Direction of Teacher Education to achieve transformation - Edify school franchise

The call here is to reintroduce meaning, interpretation and creativity, the hallmarks of teaching and learning during Vedic and post- Vedic period. Teaching and learning in classrooms must nurture and develop higher order thinking. Higher order thinking is characterized by skills such as reasoning, analysis, synthesis and problem solving; and to initiate, sustain and develop such thinking.

High school franchise
In K 12 school franchise, most important to development of higher order thinking is the interaction, both verbal and non-verbal, between teachers and students. ‘Teachers’ interaction with students must demonstrate their role as helper of students attempts to understand their own learning, by allowing students to explore their rationale and interpretation, however incomplete and incoherent those teachers also must be ‘responders’ by challenging generally held beliefs and ideas of the students.

This requires two major attributes in International school franchise teachers, one they must encourage and have divergent thinking and two their communication skills must be improved. This can happen when:

         a) They must learn and teach how facts are handled, opinions, biases, prejudices are expressed by addition   and deletions made on information on the same issue or problem.

         b) They must learn and teach how and when to question, and what open ended questions be asked to focus  attention.

The horizons of knowledge are ever increasing due to the knowledge explosion and the same is available at the click of a mouse. Teachers need to help students to manage the rapid changes around them. For this the teacher herself needs to be equipped to manage and lead change. Teacher education must aim at empowering teachers to remain updated in the new knowledge
